Who We Are

We Are Makers

We have been makers since John Willis Hulme founded J.W. Hulme Co. in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1905. Our commitment to American Made products has never been stronger, from the use of heritage leather tanneries to the artisans who cut and hand sew our travel bags, handbags, business bags and accessories.

A new generation of makers is emerging in our hometown and across the country. Beginning with the January catalog, we are proud to feature portraits of other makers and merchants in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul – people who share our passion for authentic, well-made goods.

Our first series features BlackBlue merchant Steve Kang; songstress Haley Bonar; Hennepin Made, a duo creating handmade modern glass lighting; The Foundry Home Goods owner Anna Hillegass and Minneapolis-based fashion designer Danielle Everine.

Steve Kang is the owner of BlackBlue, the Twin Cities’ go-to menswear store for all things “new heritage”. BlackBlue offers a highly curated collection of men’s apparel, footwear and accessories that reflects Steve’s personal style. Singer songwriter Haley Bonar is a prolific Minneapolis-based musician with deep Midwestern roots. Her shows in the Twin Cities’ clubs and theaters are legendary. Haley’s much anticipated new album, Last War, is due out this spring. www.haleybonar.com.

The Foundry Home Goods owner Anna Hillegass was raised in the north woods of Minnesota and moved to New York where she worked as an interior designer. She came back to establish The Foundry Home Goods, a kitchen and home goods store in a reclaimed 1800’s storefront in Minneapolis’ warehouse district. Our Story

Whether you’re shopping for fine leather luggage or a classic business bag, choose one that’s fit to last a lifetime.

Here at J.W. Hulme Co. you’ll find luxury, style and a classic look that you can’t get anywhere else. Every one of our products is carefully handcrafted in our Minnesota warehouse.  From our Heritage Leather down to the nickel hardware, precise attention is given to every detail.

A Trip to the Tannery

J.W. Hulme Co. prides itself on manufacturing its leather and canvas goods in the USA.  A part of that mission includes sourcing our raw materials from other American companies.  Meet S.B. Foot one of three domestic tanneries that supply J.W. Hulme Co. with leather and the only one that hails from our great state.

S.B. Foot opened its doors years before we did and has been producing high quality leather hides since 1872 along the banks of the Trout Brook in Red Wing, MN.  Their mission statement says it all,  “At S.B. Foot Tanning Company, our goal is quality, a goal we have achieved and delivered for more than a century.”

The sun finally came out for our road trip to Red Wing where Pete, the man about town, showed us the ropes at S.B. Foot and let us dig around in the sample room.  We are very excited about the new leathers you will soon see in our line.

Our Legacy

J.W. Hulme Co.’s original handbag, the Legacy, debuted over 25 years ago.  The Legacy handbag design is inspired by our Classic Shell bag and our hunting heritage. Its a favorite among staff and customers and has recently garnered some love from the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Lucky Magazine and the New York Post.

J.W. Hulme Co.’s rich heritage can be seen in every leather and canvas product we craft. We are so very proud of the artisans who make it all possible.  Their skills are unmatched, and they take great pride in the products they craft.  They are the true legacy of J.W. Hulme Co.

So, as spring started to finally arrive in St. Paul, we got the itch to dress up and show off some of our Leg -acy’s .  We booked a day at the studio (and it snowed!)  to shoot some photos with our favorite handbag, appropriately named, the Legacy Shoulder Bag. It comes in two sizes with 11 canvas and leather combinations. Who better to model then the ladies of J.W.Hulme Co.?
