We are proud to introduce four new leather combinations that we have been hard at work on over the past months: Harness Leather, Royce Leather, Raven Leather and Lead Black with nickel hardware. Lead black leather with nickel hardware will only be available in select briefcases and also by special order.
Our new favorite leather has been a labor of love. We searched high and low for the perfect matte chocolate brown full grain leather. Once we found it we couldn’t resist pairing it with a polished mocha leather for an elegant tone on tone combination. Our Harness Leather is lined with a brown rip-stop nylon and topped off with solid brass hardware. It looks stunning in our always classic Overnight Briefcase and Legacy Handbag.
We are pleased to show you Sahara Sands more sophisticated older sister: Royce Leather. We were saddened when the tannery that supplied our beloved Sahara Sand leather closed its door and our other tanneries were unable to provide an exact match. Then Horween Leather surprised us and sent us a sample that we liked even more. We paired their Bone Calico nubuck with a pebble grain black leather to create our Royce combination seen here in the clean lines of the Edgecumbe Briefcase and Mini Legacy Handbag.
Our new Raven Leather is so soft it must be touched to be fully appreciated. This supple jet pebble grain black leather makes a perfect slouchy handbag. Solid brass hardware adds richness and polish to this casual leather. We are loving it in our Mini Excursion handbag and Fairmount Satchel.
J.W. Hulme Co. is proud to introduce its first ever auction site: The Archives. Twice a year we hold a Seconds and Sample sale at our Saint Paul location. Those not fortunate enough to live in Saint Paul have missed out on this opportunity to get our products at a great price, then came The Archives. Now everyone can have access to a J.W. Hulme Co. one-of-a-kind bag. The Archives will include bags that were made as samples, bags that never made it into production, styles that are from our archive and haven’t been produced for some time and bags that have not passed our stringent quality control.
Make sure to check back as new styles will be added weekly. Happy Bidding!
In case you missed it! We had the pleasure of making several limited edition vintage tent messenger bags for J.Crew. They were so popular that they sold out in 2 day!
This canvas messenger is based off of our Sporting Originals #8 Classic Oxford Field Messenger.
J.W. Hulme Co. will be hosting its semi-annual Seconds Sale this Saturday, August 20th from 10am to 2pm at our showroom.
Every bag that leaves J.W. Hulme Co. must pass our rigorous quality control inspection. Those that don’t pass land on our seconds rack. Chris, our quality control manager, inspects every bag, finding small imperfections that you’ll need your glasses to see for yourself. This process ensures that when you order a bag from JWH you are getting superior quality. It also allows us to sell slightly flawed items at great prices. You will find some discontinued items and samples on our seconds rack as well.
Please note this sale applies to in-store purchases only. We will not be able to accept phone orders for the seconds sale.
This past week J.W. Hulme Co. and Artful Living had the pleasure of hosting an event at our Saint Paul workshop. Event go-ers enjoyed factory tours, a preview of our new Fall Collection, the opportunity to get their bags or leather goods monogrammed and were entered in a drawing to design their own Legacy Handbag.
Our leathers feel as good as they look. During a factory tour you just can’t help but touch the different leathers.
One lucky lady had the opportunity to watch her American Heritage Legacy Handbag get embossed with her monogram. Watching the entire process can be a little nerve wrecking, but the results are always stunning.
See more photos from the event on our Facebook Page.
J.W. Hulme Co. prides itself on manufacturing its leather and canvas goods in the USA. A part of that mission includes sourcing our raw materials from other American companies. Meet S.B. Foot one of three domestic tanneries that supply J.W. Hulme Co. with leather and the only one that hails from our great state.
S.B. Foot opened its doors years before we did and has been producing high quality leather hides since 1872 along the banks of the Trout Brook in Red Wing, MN. Their mission statement says it all, “At S.B. Foot Tanning Company, our goal is quality, a goal we have achieved and delivered for more than a century.”
The sun finally came out for our road trip to Red Wing where Pete, the man about town, showed us the ropes at S.B. Foot and let us dig around in the sample room. We are very excited about the new leathers you will soon see in our line.
Read more about S.B Foot’s history here and their tanning process here.

Chuck Watt, our very own leather buffing expert, shares how we buff each piece from our American Heritage leather collection.
The leather arrives at our workshop from the tannery without the final process completed. After the bag is made it spends some time at the buffing table.
Step 1: “First you start up the buffing wheel and buff a small section to test out how much wax you will need. You start buffing around the edges to get that worn appearance. You add wax as needed and stop using the buffing wheel when you get the desired darkness and luster”
Step 2: “Then you heat it up with the heat gun, usually set around 660 degrees, to lightly melt the wax and let it soak in to the leather”
Step 3: “After all of that, you hand rub the bag with a soft cloth to give it a nice shine.”
Every bag made in American Heritage Leather is hand buffed, giving the leather a well worn patina. This patina will look better and better with every trip taken. Our Duffle bag in American Heritage leather has put in some miles and is starting to get a real personality.
J.W. Hulme Co.’s original handbag, the Legacy, debuted over 25 years ago. The Legacy handbag design is inspired by our Classic Shell bag and our hunting heritage. Its a favorite among staff and customers and has recently garnered some love from the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Lucky Magazine and the New York Post.
J.W. Hulme Co.’s rich heritage can be seen in every leather and canvas product we craft. We are so very proud of the artisans who make it all possible. Their skills are unmatched, and they take great pride in the products they craft. They are the true legacy of J.W. Hulme Co.
So, as spring started to finally arrive in St. Paul, we got the itch to dress up and show off some of our Leg -acy’s . We booked a day at the studio (and it snowed!) to shoot some photos with our favorite handbag, appropriately named, the Legacy Shoulder Bag. It comes in two sizes with 11 canvas and leather combinations. Who better to model then the ladies of J.W.Hulme Co.?

We have the best customers in the world, and we do our best to give them exceptional service. Periodically they take the time to write us thank you notes. Nothing is better than receiving something besides a bill in the mail, especially when it is a letter filled with kind words of encouragement and support.
